I am new to this forum but not new to automotive work. I have seven automobiles and do 90% of all work myself or with the help of my wife.
I have two Jeep Grand Wagoneers. A 1982 and a 1987. I'm going to rebuild the engine for the 87 and add fuel injection. I'm consiering doing the rebuild on the 82 engine so I can continue to use the 87 while I do the engine work.
Otther than any defects is there any reason to favor the 87 block over the 82 block?
Thanks,
Dennis

I've heard that in the late 80s they lightened the blocks a little by removing some material from the main webs. Those blocks have 2 extra freeze plugs behind the flywheel. I really haven't heard about any difference in durability though. Unless you're building something well over 500 HP, either block should be just fine.

Thanks Bob. No big HP. Just trying to make it reliable and get as much fuel mileage as possible.

You should get the same result from either block if they are good. Chances are they are both good if they didnt come from a siezed motor.
