Looking to trade off the Hemi and the Ranger for a new diesel truck. I like the size and capability of the Hemi, but need better towing capability. Still like my long bed though - usually carry a bunch-o-stuff when hunting and camping.

I like the Cumins, and there is a '07 crew cab short bed available at the $tealership - he wants $26K plus both my trucks in trade. Not happening ... (+ title and registration+insurance increase)

There is also an '05 Chevy Duramax crew cab short bed with only 12K on the clock asking $32K. We didn't discuss numbers on that one, but it's still an option.

I'd rather get a used diesel in good shape than pay $44K for a new one.

Willing to travel to pick it up if you know of one ... =D>

I would opt for the older diesel. I believe emmisions are strange on the 07's and you have to run specialized diesel fuel.

I have an 03 Duramax/Allison, crew cab (4 door) short bed. I just turned 60K miles. There are times I wish I had the 8 foot bed, like when I haul lumber. It's still pretty long, turning radius is wide, and parking in a tight lot is about impossible. Except for the speedo breaking twice (under warranty) I haven't had any problems. I did just get a notice that they extended the warranty period on the injectors to 7 years, 200K miles because of some erosion problems. Just FYI, I bought mine in December of 04, it had about 26K miles on it, for 28K out the door. Bob tufcj

2007 and newer diesel's no matter if it is a pickup, or a semi will only run on the low sulfer fuel. I know that on a cummins truck (according to daimler) if you run high sulfer fuel engine damage may occour. Any 2006 or older should run on either fuel.

I use a 96 extended cab 4x4 long bed V10 for tow vehicle. Sure the price of gas is up but it gets about the same mileage as a J20 with a 360. I bought it when gas was still cheap. It is a bit tuff in parking lots but hey little cars take 2 spots sometimes so WTF :mrgreen: When I bought it I intended to use it for towing cars and trucks on trailer so I made sure I got a long bed cause I've had a couple of close encounters with short wheel base rigs. It came with factory HD tow package but unfortunately in that year a rear sway bar was not part of that package so I added one. I thought about and looked at the diesels but at that time they were still pretty noisy and smelly. With that said, my son bought an 02 2500 4x4 diesel extended cab short bed new and has not had any issues with it at all and he has a ton of miles on it. He does not do any towing though.

Bob, this dealer has an 05 Duramax with only 12K. It's a good looking truck and decked out (leather and stuff) but it's a short bed. Where am I gunna sleep when the Mrs. finds out??? 6' isn't much room #-o

Thanks BREK, I heard about the low sulfer changes for '07, but didn't realize it prohibits using older diesel fuel :shock:

a440plus6, good news for your son, but I do tow and was a bit concerned about the short bed. Plus I load that sucker up when I head to the woods. Ask MC what stuff I bring to support him at the FSJ Invasion!! :?

Dealer wasn't too thrilled when I told him I was looking for an older, long bed crew cab. I like the fold out shelf in my Hemi Dodge now - makes a great place to tie down the refrigerator (to keep the beer, Ice Hole and meat at stable temps) :!:

Actually, the "short bed" Chevy is 6.5'. With the tailgate down, a 8' sheet of plywood or drywall is completely supported, so it really isn't a problem. A few 8' boards will go inside the bed at an angle with the gate closed. All diesel being sold now is low sulfur (under 15 PPM). I think it's a federal law that took effect in October or November. All 2007 light truck diesels now have a catalyst, and the high sulfur fuel will plug them just like leaded gas in an unleaded car. The low sulfur stuff burns just fine in the earlier motors, but I do think mine rattles a bit more with the low sulfur stuff. It actually runs quieter and gets a bit better mileage on the B20 diesel (20% biodiesel). The only place I can find that is at Sapp Bros. truck stops. Bob tufcj

not sure what year, and it appears he just drove it home from where he bought it in Iowa, parked it in the shed and hasn't touched it since. 111!!!

You guys heard all the goodies about the new 6.7 Cummins? My buddy has ordered a mega cab, cab and chassis setup to be flatbedded. Another week and i'll have to tune in and letcha know how shes gonna run :mrgreen: They were saying it is supposed to have a variable boost turbo too so that it'll make boost from idle i guess :lo1l:

Yeah, I was thinking of the crew cab short bed, that ALMOST gives the same tow-vehicle length to tow as an extended cab, long bed. But I haul a bunch-o-shit when I camp or Jeep (ask about my load!!) And, have you seen the new Dodge Mega-Cabs?? The back seat is friggn HUGE!!! :shock: More room in the back seat than I have in the whole cab of the Ranger!!! 111!!! So maybe a mega-cab and short box will net me the same O/A length as my truck for tow stability???

Bio-diesel was a thought to the future, but it currently costs almost the same to make as regular diesel!!?? Ummm... Sapp?? Never even seen one :oops:

the principal here at my work has a bio-diesel he set up. I give him my used grease and one other esturant does the same and he has not bought gas in six months. the filters is his only ongoing expence and the is minimal. oh and he drives ten miles each way to and from work daily. just an FYI

I'm (on a good day) 60 miles round trip per day and sometimes weekends :smile:

The 'Trucks' show that did an episode on bio-diesel had a filter/mixing contraption where the used oil was filtered mixed with some other stuff and filtered again before it was introduced to the tank. Haven't read up on the making of bio-fuel, it but sounded like something I don't want to do in my garage from thje Trucks show

Veggie-diesel is cheaper to purchase at the pump but your mpg will decrease, plus you still have to use regular diesel to start the truck.
Currently 15 ppm is sold at the pumps, this is low sulfer diesel, diesel was originally sold at 500ppm sulfer. New for 2007 is the ultra low sulfer diesel and it will function in all the older diesel engines, but the 2007 models can only run the uls diesel.

Yep. :mrgreen: but it is info about diesels all the same, and there is a lot of topics from making your own fuel to some HIW, performance mods, ...it is a lot like here but with more torque. 8)
