Centerforce flywheel

This may be common knowledge to some, but I for one don't know what centerforce means by this. Their listing for a 390 up to 71' flywheel is part #70720 and that is said to have a 4.500" crank register and part # 70730 72' and up 401 has a crank register of 4.625". So my question is what is crank register?

I THOUGHT THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 70 AND 72 UP CRANK WAS THE AREA IN THE REAR OF THE CRACK MACHINED FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THE 70 STYLE WAS A SMALLER OPENING FOR THE BORG WARNER TRANS AND THE 72 UP WAS FOR THE TORQUEFLITE

The early crank flange is dead flat, with an O.D. of 4.500". The later crank has a raised area around the area where the converter sits and the O.D. is 4.625" The register on the flywheel is the machined dish that the crank sits into. Bob tufcj

That is what I was trying to get at also.

Bob, I thought that all cast flywheel's were dished, and the billet steel were esentially flat?

Actually the flange on the early crank is flat, the later crank flange is raised in the center. (I edited my earlier post to clarify). All the cast flywheels have a dish in the back that sits around the crank to center and support them, that's the index they talk about. Bob tufcj
