Head Gasket

I am ready to install my heads and my jeep service manual says to use "non hardening sealing compound." What are they talking about. Is it just RTV silicone, or what? Have yall ever heard of this? If so what do yall use? Thanks again, -Matt

I used Permatex (sp?) spray copper coat on the head gaskets. IIRC I sprayed one coat let setup then did a second coat both sides. Dave ---- ps: IIRC #2 you have to use sealer on one of the head bolts too Read the TSM to check.

You install your head gaskets dry these days if you have a good set of ROL or Fel-pros. On the intake yes you should use RTV on the lips and corners.

I installed my Fel Pro gaskets dry. I don't have a lot of miles on them but I've got no leaks yet.

Yup, I used ROL head-gaskets and they went on dry... And they looked pretty-good as-well :mrgreen:

generally you only need sealer (spray copper) on metal head gaskets. they dont have the crush that multilayer gaskets do and are prone to leaking.

I did this back in June so I don't remember if it was Fel-pro or TSM said to use sealer but thought the Fel-pros said to use sealer :-| they are metal on both sides :-| On the intake pan gasket (Fel-pro) I used brush on hi tack around the intake ports and RTV at water outlets, inplace of rubber end seals and exh. crossover - that is blocked on my motor as it's used only for drag racing. yep, amc tech day one. open intake gasket box/blester pack, remove rubber endseals, place straight in trash.
