So I was in the process of fixing the leaking tranny cooler lines, actually running the engine to top off the tranny fluid when I hear a grinding sound and the engine quit.
I was afraid this might happen and it did...

I looked at the gear closely and discovered that a drunk monkey would have centered the gear better before cutting the teeth. Hell, I could have eyeballed it and it would have been centered better.
And, of course, I have to double check the machining job on the HEI distributor. That may have been a contributing factor as well. I have two known good pieces to compare it to so I should be able to see pretty quickly whether or not the distributor is machined properly.
Naturally, the gam gear is a little chewed up too. So EVERYTHING has to come off so I can swap it... 🙁:
At least I got the flashing out of the cam gear and there was plenty of oil on the distributor. So it wasn't a complete fuster cluck.
Time to order the matched hardened gears.
