ironman_gq i am having trouble with the power steering on my cj7 at times when off roading i find it difficult to impossible to turn the wheel left or right unless the wheels are turning and when it does turn it is very jerky or notchy. it has a new steering box and i want to know if the box might have a problem or if my pump might be going out at times the pump does make noise.

tufcj Probably the pump. I had the same problem with mine, replaced the box and it worked for a while and quit again. Turned out the hoses were old and breaking down internally. The small particles of rubber were jamming the rotary valve in the box, causing the pump to overheat. I ended up replacing the box (twice), pump and hoses. Bob tufcj
ironman_gq ill try the pump the box and hoses are new and i have a ps cooler id go hydraulic but i think its overkill for the purpose i built the rig for its mostly for hunting and it does see some road use
BREK don't know how it is where you're at, but here in MN it is not street legal to have hydraulic steering
ironman_gq im in northern MN and thats one reason i wont go to hydraulic that and i like to have a mechanical connection to the road.
joey Have you checked for air in the system? My CJ did something very similar when I had it out on the trail. Once I got it back to level ground and cranked the wheel back and forth a few times, the steering got better. By the time I got home, it was back to normal. It would be worth checking before you start swapping parts all around.
