I just bought another cj5. This one's got a 401. When you turn the key on, nothing, but if you leave it on for a good while, the headlight comes on. Go ahead and turn it all the way over to start and it clicks and everything powers off. No lights or nothing with the key on. What could the problem be here?

Bad battery connection. Remove and clean every connection from the battery post to the starter. Also make sure ground wires are in place and clean. There should be one from the battery to engine block, one from the block to frame (usually across the passenger motor mount), and one from either the battery to body tub, or engine to tub (or both). Also make sure the solenoid has a good connection to the fender, that's it's only ground.

Itmay also be the starter selenoid hooked up wrong. Check the baby blue wire and the red wire (small wires)

How are they supposed to be hooked up? I was wondering if it was something with the keyswitch so I turned it on and tried to cross over the solenoid and got nothing, which I thought was odd.

The blue wire should go to the "S" post (start). If there is a red wire, it would go to the "I" post (ignition), some don't have one. The letters should be on the solenoid body near the post.
Also could be a bad battery. I had one that shorted internally. Showed 13+ volts on a volt meter, but wouldn't carry any load. Take it to a auto parts store and have it charged and load tested.
