My 401 has survived the dyno testing and is somewhat happy in its new home...my rusty J10. Although I was shooting for 500HP I came up short, I know the Hedman(Cheap) headers are killing the exhaust flow and running 2 4bbl is not "ideal" for making killer power...but... The peak HP was 460 at around 5500RPM the torque wasn't a peak at all...at 1800RPM (the lowest we could load the dyno) was 398ft¬?lbf, it rose to 450ft¬?lbf at 2000RPM and stayed there until 5500RPM. The flatest torque curve I have ever seen. As soon as I get some time I will scan and post the charts and if I can get it to work, a short video of one of the pulls on the dyno. It's in the truck now and have to wait until Tuesday for exhaust, :smile: then it's off to the land fill to dump a load of garbage and weigh the truck to find out how much weight I need to add for the truck pulls coming up. Of course I have to cruise threw town for any "takers" :? Any bets on how long the QT case will last? :shock: Hopefully I can get some brakes back with a vac can...anybody use one before? :-|

It was made using the flow numbers from my Indy heads.

I'll look for that cam card I have in my 360 this weekend and try and post it by Monday night. It's a milder cam but still had plenty of power and I would smoke many 350's and even a few 454's with it.

That is awesome! I am so glad that you stuck to your guns and built that truck - I think it's funny as hell! You have any pics of that engine in it's new home?

Methinks that if you ditched the dual quads and went to a Torker or an Airgap with a good single, you would probably get alot closer to 500 :-| however, I do like the thought of that old beater with a radical 401. :lo1l:

I think you have built the exact motor I am trying to build. Would you be willing to share your recipe with me along with some ballpark cost figures? I am going for 400+ hp with 2 390 cfm holleys and interestingly the exact same valve covers----see my other threads.

I went with Indy heads (come with rockers, bigger valves, ports, better chamber) Offy intake, KB pistons (10.5 to 1 with Indy chambers) Total seal rings. I also opted for the Indy valve covers and thier oil pump. Mildon 8Q pan, crank scraper. Block has valley oil line mod. Stock pick-up plugged and bottom of block drigged and tapped for AN line. A few more holes also added to drop more oil onto the cam(this motor is ran on the street...in traffic:lo1l: ) Alum. high vol water pump. 160 stat with stock 2 core rad. (no over heating problems yet) Block was deburred and oil system modified at all turns with long carbide burs. Crank forging ground smooth and shot peened. Rods ARP bolts and beams polished and shot peened (mag checked also) Everthing except for the boring, hone and crank grinding was done by myself. I also ported the heads but that was after I got the cam.(Indy wanted the cam specs before they send the heads to set up the springs) The porting was an after-thought for me. But I still have the numbers from the flow bench to order my next cam (roller??? :? ) I do have another 401 that I may build one day for my Javlin AMX. There is alot of expense in getting the grinding stones, degree wheel etc etc the first time around...also the braided lines and fittings aren't cheap. Then you have to beef up the tranny(farmed that out...add $700) Can you make that power with stock heads?? you bet...do they cool as good as alum? Maybe not...I can go up on compression if I want on a re-ring and re-cam if needed. I can also make more power with a single carb. (dyno guy figured another 20hp easy) It was over $6000 but less than $10,000 that Indy wanted. It'll be cheaper next time as I have alot of the stuff I needed now. This motor is a bi--ch on the street at anything under 30mph. It really comes to life at around 2300RPM then it rockets to the rev limiter. :mrgreen: I would go with more lobe center next time I think...smoother idle for street. But I got what I wanted from Crower...rarely driven on the street I told them. :?: I'll tell you one thing though...a guy in mustange or camaro will sure look dumb getting smoked by a rusty 4WD pick-up. 8) Oh yeh, I have a line on another 401 also... :lo1l:

:t: Hey I have to get those!!! But I think they'll scrape the ground with a full load of wood. 111!!! But then again for an extra 40 hp.... Actually I smoked a Chevy the other day(I love that warm feeling I get :? )...I had to keep out of the throttle too because the TQ chain jumps now. :(: All I need is to find the adaptor for the np 205 to the th400 and the right th400 tail shaft and I'm in business again! :t:
