Soylent_Green I need to replace the stretched-out timing chain on my 460 ford. (the reason it didn't make it to dresser this year #-o ) What are the advantages of choosing a gear set over a chain set? Thanks!
Goose A Gear set will minimize any fluctuation in the cam timing..And If you pay for the "Noisey option" It will 1. sound sorta like a roots blower 2. drive you nuts after the first two weeks 3. Force your buddies to spray paint "POSEUR" on your tailgate (Or if your buddies are like mine they cant spell it so it will be "Wannabe") Seriously.. thats about the only advantage minimizing any fluctuation in cam timing.. some say they last longer.. they might..
1980_Cj7 Funny that this came up. I am currently contemplating a Pete Jackson noisy gear drive for my current 401 build up. I am interested in some more opinions guys.
tufcj I've heard that you should stay away from gear drives except in a race only application. Spend the money and go with a high quality roller timing set. A timing chain always has a little slack and absorbs the shock load between the cam and crank (neither turn at a steady rate). With the closer to solid coupling of a gear set, more shock load is transmitted directly between the two, possibly leading to metal fatigue in the cam and crank. Noise is always an issue, straight-cut gears will whine. I don't know about the 460, but the AMC gear set does take some machining of the block, so it can only be done while the engine is out and apart. Bob tufcj
Mudrat Noise? WHAT NOISE? I CAN'T HEAR WHAT YOUR SAYING!!!!! Yah their NOISY and the 'cool' effect wears off real quick. Stick with the double roller chain drive and save the 'cool' for the bitchen exhaust you can now afford :t:
