Holley Truck Avenger vs. Edelbrock Thunder series Offroad AVS
V8 application.
I've "heard" good things about the Truck Avenger, but i've also heard bad things about Holleys in general. At the same time, i've had great luck with Edelbrocks...easy to tune, great power, but they leave something to be desired offroad. I havent heard anything about the Offroad Thunder series.
Anybody ran either of these carbs and have an opinion on them? Im almost inclined to go with the Edelbrock, but i cant seem to find any good info on the one im looking at.
Originally, i was going to go with a Q-Jet, but im starting to rethink my options. I need something that can handle decent angles, but im not shopping for fuel injection just yet. :-|

I have a Q-jet on my CJ5 and love it. I would consider contacting Sean Murphy and have him build you one. He has a website. I'm getting ready to put in a 360 and plan to use the Q-jet onn that as well
zero cool
I ran a Truck Avenger 670CFM on an otherwise stock 360 in my old 85 Grand Wagoneer. It was the closest thing to fuel injection I've ever seen in a carburetor. But it did require substantial tweaking to get it to run right.
I've never heard of anyone actually running that Edelbrock AVS off road so I can't comment on them.
But, everyone I have ever gone off road with who ran the regular Edebrock Perforer carb has had nothing but trouble when they got into any moderate angle off road. Even those who installed the off road needle and seats hated the off road performance of the Performer carb.
Also, without exception, everyone I know who runs a Quadrajet has no trouble at all off road.

I ended up with a Qjet for now. After dealing with Edelbrocks, i've never seen a more complicated 'looking' carb. I've heard when they run good, they run great. I have a few friends running them and angles dont seem to be a problem........also have people telling me they are garbage. It's all what you make of it i suppose.
Any contact info for sean Murphy? might need his assistance since this carb is used and i havent even fired it up yet.

I pretty much agree with Zero Cool 100%. And, I run a Holley TA 670 on a 304 with GREAT success so far, and that is after a few MC2100's and and Eddel 1406 with the offroad needle and seat kit (totally sucked).

Ya know I'm am totally amazed, There seems to be a "Placebo" phenomenon going on here.. I Have used (and worked on for customers) Just about every carb out there.. And it occurs to me that people are usually a "Fan" of one carb or another based on a couple things
Cool factor Is it what thier buddies run? or what they dog on.
Ability to read the darned instructions!
How far beyond the bounds of common sense the selection of carb size is (You know 1150 dominator on a 304)
And the stated purpose of the truck.. Is it a poser wheeler or a rock crawler??
All Carbs have thier strengths and weaknesses, Holleys don't meter well at mid throttle (daily driving) they never have and until they change the design they never will .. At WOT they are great and if you are always wackin the throttle..plus the didle factor and so many poor designs, 600 cfm with a fuel transfer tube and two little o rings.. for twenty years this carb has been the .20 cent part that broke, but to change the performance of the carb you have to open it up and this costs you gaskets for the metering block a pair of orings and some vaseline..
Q-jets.. Good carbs once you plug the metering well with foam so fuel doesn't splash into the venturi during bumops or hard launches.
the edelbrock needs off road needles as does the old AFB carter (duh since it is the Edel).. They all have thier fans the difference is for the most part it is an emotional following and has nothing to do with rational thought..
In short any Carb will work as well as the other IF you take the time to learn the quirks, dont buy someone elses used junk and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!..

I know a guy who used him and he was very impressed.
A lot of Magezines use him as well.
