Does anybody have a recomendation for a mild performance cam for 258? I purchased a 258 with (supposedly) 10k on rebuild for my 79 Cherokee (auto trans,4.27 gears,33in tires). I had to change oil pan and valve cover, inside condition shows recent rebuild. Wouldn't start after install, no fuel to carb. Changed pump, new pump still not pulling fuel. I put finger over inlet, very little suction. After installing elec. pump fired right up. Lots of lifter/valve clatter, even after oil pressure was up to 45 and temp 180. Previous experience suggests cam/lifter wear. Any suggestions?

I used a 260 duration Comp cam and was extremelly happy with it. It's not a huge step up from stock but performance is much better and with the addition of other modifications such as a 4bbl, TFI, or even a 4.0 head, the cam really compliments it.
Any hotter of a cam (272* range) and your looking at mandatory headwork for better flow and beyond-stock bolt ons just to get it to function correctly with that engine or performance suffers.
Cant say they're cheap though, mine was almost $500. Shop around and see what you can find.
