I generally use a short piece, about 24", hooked crossways over the intake (RF to LR or LF to RR). I just use 2 slightly longer grade 8 bolts and washers.
What really works great is a leveler, I think mine was about $30 at the local Auto Zone. I put the engine in my AMX w/trans attached, alone and without scratching the paint.
It attaches to all 4 corner manifold bolts and allows you to change the balance by turning a crank, so you can tilt and level the engine. Well worth the money.

well i may end up gettin a leveler for when i pull the 360, but it wont work for the 258

because of clearance issues with my ceiling, i had to go with the shortest amount of chain possible so i could still use the leveler.
A leveler should work just fine with the 258, you just have to be creative in how you bolt it to the block.
I wish i had used one when i installed the 258 a few years back, it would have made things much easier.

Oh....Pulling an engine #-o
You wont need a leveler for that, but when it all comes loose, it can keep the 'flopping' to a minimum

yea im just going to get a leveler, i just figured since in every pic i see of one used it utilizes the intake manifold from a V8 so i didnt know if you could use it on a 258...should help alot also when dropping the 360 in

Yeah, when i pulled my 258 several weeks ago, i had the head off so i just bolted the leveler right onto the block useing the headbolts.

Yea, I've got one on my wish list ...
What's the difference between the $20, $30 and $50 versions? other than the Speedway version has some additional mounting holes for the chains ... :-|

I'm obviously mentally defective beacause i cant figure out how to keep the hoist stable #-o, it started to fall over from the weight of the leveler, does something need to be tightened or something to fix this prob?
CJim7
uh...put the wheel beams out on the hoist? Dont forget to lock them down with the pins.
bls33
had the wheel beams out and the pins were in, but where the pin was in is where the hoist was moving if that makes sense lol
CJim7
hhmmm...should be two pins for each leg. The front pin allows the leg to fold up when pulled, and it also locks it down........at least on my hoist.

hmmmm that could be it, i hope so because i got my mounts today :!:
