Swappin a 258 for a 258?

Hey team, Ed the Newbie again.

Can I swap in a long block from any year or do I need to get one that's from a specific date range like 76-80?
My current engine is a 79 258 and I have a lead on a 1982 CJ7 long block.

Any help or references would be great!

Shouldnt be any problem at all.....same bolt patterns and engine dimensions.

you did not post were you are at. sure this is a bit late in showing up, but here in the late great state of klafourna, one can not install ANY motor block into there jeep, chevy, dodge, etc, etc. as one can only use same year or newer. smog problem. :(:

I dropped a built 79 engin into an 87YJ with the only problem being the flex plate for the 79 is different than the 87. Other than that, rock on!!! :t:

I believe he wants to swap out a 79 block and replace it with an 82 :t:

You can swap but the parts are not all interchangeable. Some parts may be different. So you can do a complete swap but remember what year motor you have when you go in to get parts.
