Oil spewing from dipstick

Howdy all, This is my first post here so I'll try to tread lightly! Although I'm not running an AMC plant in my 1979 CJ7, I have heard great things about this 'board, so I thought I'd come and use your Search and see if I can find some resolution to my problem. My search didn't yield anything so here is my question: My 258 I6 is spewing oil from the dipstick. My oil pressure is fine and my cylinder compression is just OK (128, 143, 140, 143, 150, 145. Spec's are 150). It's not overfilled either. In the driveway it's not spewing out, only when I'm underway. When I get back home and pop the hood, I see fresh oil coating everything on that side. So what can it be? Bad PCV hose routing? Ring blow-by? Has anyone on this board experienced oil spew from the dipstick? Many thanks! Ed in St. Charles, IL

Welcome to the board. The 258 IS an AMC plant. Lot's of people are very fond of them. Oil out the dipstick is from too much crankcase pressure. That can be a plugged PCV system or worn out piston rings. First check the PCV. Make sure the breather hoses on top of the valve cover aren't clogged or kinked. Make sure the ball in the PCV valve rattles freely when you shake it. If that all checks out, do a wet compression check. A couple of squirts of oil in the cylinder, then check. If the compression comes up a lot, then your rings are shot. That 128 on the front cylinder concerns me a bit. How many miles on the engine? I just moved back to the Aurora, IL area after being around Denver for 17 years. I grew up in Joliet. Where the heck do you guys 4-wheel around here? Do you belong to a club in the area? Bob tufcj

I guess the 258 is an AMC plant! My bad. I have a new PCV valve ordered from Napa since they were sold out of them. Even though the old one rattles, it looks like the original! I'll see what it does for me when I pick it up Monday afternoon. Then I'll do the wet compression test. I know when I bought it (late last summer), it wasn't spewing. So I bet it was from me "correcting" the few vaccuum hoses that seemed to be incorrectly routed as per the diagram charts.

As for you moving back from the beautiful state of Colorado, I HOPE it was for work reasons! We've been toying with the idea of moving to the Evergreen area out there. My brother just moved back from Frederick for work related reasons. Since family is an important part of living, we'll probably stay here. IMHO, Illinois s^cks.

I usually frequent the CJOffroad.com 'boards and most Illini go to http://www.thecliffsinsaneterrain.com/index.html. I have open diff's so I mainly use my Jeep for steet cruisin with my kiddies. But that wouldn't entirely stop me from going there with a few online jeepers from the area!

The move was definitely work related. Funny thing is that I worked for AT&T in 1988. They closed a plant in Warrenville, and moved the operations to Denver. When they spun off Lucent, I went to Lucent. Lucent closed the plant in Denver and moved the entire operation back to Naperville, just 5 miles down the street from where it started. 17 years later, life comes full circle. I'll never understand big business. I would never have come back to Illinois, except my family is mostly still here in the Chicago area, and I only need a little over 2 more years until I can retire. No Lucent jobs available in the Denver area (except commissioned sales, which I'm not good at). I hooked up with some of my old Jeep club buddies, and the Joliet Mud Turtles club (which I used to belong to). They talked about the cliffs and the badlands over in Indiana. My Jeep is down right now anyway. Last trip I took (Winding Stairs, near Monument, CO.), I hurt the t-case. A shift rail cap fell off and it about ran dry on lube, now it's very noisy. Thanks for the info, Bob, and I'll keep you in mind if we have a group ride! I know of a handful in the area who'd like to make a run.
