Two Questions:
Question #1. Is this normal? :-|
During Cool Start. My AMC 360 has Valve train rattle until the Oil presure goes up. Usually one to two seconds.
Question #2. Is this valve adjustment acceptable. :-|
My 360 has the Bridge or Pedestial Rockers and I found the Rockers adjustments too tight. Approximately 1-1/2 turns from No Lash to 35 ft. lbs torque. I installed shims under each Pedestial and was able to bring the adjustment to 1/2 turn to "less than" 1 full turn from No lash to 35 ft. lbs torgue. The book says 1/2 turn from no lash. But I found this hard to accomplish with the Pedestial rockers.
Any Help would be much appreciated.

Question 2 first. Remove the shims from under the pedestels, they are supposed to be seated on the head surface and the bolt torqued to spec. It does not matter how many turns the lifter plunger takes up the difference
Question 1. Did the noise start after the shim job? If not 2 possible reasons. 1 the aluminum bridges and rocker arms are worn out giving you excessive clearance or 2 your lifters are bleeding down and not holding oil pressure after shut down. Oldsmobubble V8s have the same problem when they get up in mileage . Hope this helps.

If you have a Fram oil filter, get rid of it. Buy Wix, or NAPA (Wix)

Appreciate the helpful response.
So, the rattle is not good.
First,
I installed a Wix Oil filter last week following your earlier recommendations. It did quicken the Oil pressure response on start-up. :!:
Second.
I installed the shims between the Head and the rocker pedestial, then torgue to spec. With the intake manifold off and TDC on each cylinder. I closely observed the preload on each lifter. Seeking to get between 1/2 to 1 turn preload on each lifter. Where am I going south? :?
Is this not the correct way to adjust the valves?

Is this a new motor, or have you installed a new cam? If you answer yes to either of these, then check your oil for glitter.

Yes, New Motor, new cam too - Approximately 4500 miles on motor. You're thinking the metal is from my CAM?

I have had the exact same problem that you describe, and it was from a cam failure. I still curse Summit cams :(: . Some guys have ran them with no trouble, I tried two, both failed at break-in. I went with Crane, voila, no trouble. The metal shavings from two cam failures wiped out my main, rod, and cam bearings.
