Where can I find info about converting my heads to accept an adjustable valvetrain? Its a '76 AMC 401.
Thanks

Right here.
You wll need to either get custom pushrods or mill the tops of the 5/16-18 threaded bosses down .250" PLUS the thickness of the set of guideplates you are using to use stock *hardened* pushrods. You will need guideplates to keep the rocker from popping sideways and pushrods that are made for use with guideplates. You can either run a 3/8-16 roller rocker stud or 7/16 thread roller rocker stud and the bosses will need to be re-tapped for these. Many have used small block chevy and ford rockers with luck but if we are talking SERIOUS performance then you need something closer. If you dont want to go through the hassle I have a set of 291-c heads that dont require boss milling or guideplates and still have the larger valves for sale for $250 but they are bare and will need parts.

Ok thanks for the quick reply. I'm just going for better cooling and longevity out of my engine. Its getting .040 over and was kind of looking for some things to get low end grunt and make it "smoother". I am getting it balanced and having the heads polished. Was thinking about putting in a new set of pistons to up the CR in between 9.0-9.5:1. I already have a mild cam to go in it and a Edelbrock Performer intake. I will be running a Edelbrock 650 until I dig up a TBI setup. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Especially if it has to do with machining. I will be taking the block and heads the the machinist today at 5 and want to clear everything up with him then. Thanks again!

Also, someone suggested to do this mod
"As far as oiling mods with this combo you will only need the pressure equalizer line from the main galley boss at the front of the block to between the 2 lifters on the passenger side of the block. this equalizes the pressure on the main bearings and as the main fail on an AMC v-8 is the rear main drying up this will stop that from happening"
Can you tell me where to find more info on this?
BREK
search the amc oiling section, you should be able to find everything you need to know there

Go with the smallest possible overbore on your 401, or your next rebuild will require sleeves. Try for .010"
SaintCyr
That is the smallest overbore. And I do already have another block that requires sleeves. :o) By the way Ill sell the one that needs sleeves for $50.

It depends on the block when we are talking boring them out. For oiling mods their are many ways to go
1. Smaller hole cam bearings
2. Valley line
3. Smaller hole pushrods
4. Smaller hole rockers
The primary are
1. Extra capacity pans
2. External pickups

Is there a text version of the valley mod. I'm at work and can't see the pictures posted. Thanks.

what do you think it costs to sleeve a block and how much to ship it to zip 55092
SaintCyr
I was going to sleeve it for $800 and that was from a friend. I've heard of people going all the way up to $1100. Don't know about shipping, but I'm at 74104 if you want to figure it up... I can wrap it up and put it on a pallet.

Did you have it UT'd, somtimes all is not lost.
