I pulled the intake manifold off my 401 and found a 'wierd' surprise..... There is a thin piece of sheetmetal over the valley complete with intake holes and what i would guess to be drain holes at the bottom for oil. That is this thing?!? I was expecting to see a gasket of sorts....and there wasnt even that. Im a newbie when it comes to these engines, but im going to take a guess that it probably keeps hot oil from splattering onto the underside of the intake manifold :scratch: Anyway, is this thing going to seal back up when i reinstall the manifold? I was carefull when removeing it so it isnt dinged up or anything....also, do i need to use a bead of silicon anywhere on this thing? (it didnt have any silicone residue when i removed it.....) Jeez i feel like a rookie here....save me oh V8 gurus :hathat40:

Known as the "Tin" its a seperate gasket (mostly) from the "full" gasket set. Although some Felpro resellers have decided to include it and about time. Behind it...on the block are two small strips (front and rear)...they come in the gskt kit.. Talk to your best local gasket supplier is my suggestion. Yes U need a new one 'specially on a 401...no matter how careful U R it will leak if reused...and NO...no sealant etc...Bad news ?...junk it. Just my MHO from previous experience. Regards

Here in the states, it's a valley pan intake gasket. Agreeing with Drover, it needs replaced when the intake come off. No sealant is necessary, but I like to use a little silicone around the water ports, and toss the rubber end seals and use a 3/16" bead of silicone in there place, just let it sit for about 20 mins. before dropping the intake on.

That's factory. You need either the valley pan or the factory baffle on the bottom of the manifold (or both), or you'll suck oil thru the PCV system. I've always used a valley pan. I spray around the intake ports with Permatex spray copper, and a thin film of RTV around the water ports. I've always used the rubber end gaskets with just a dab of RTV where they meet the head. I've never had a problem with leaks. Bob tufcj

Thanks for the help guys....i suppose the 304, 360, 390 all use this same pan? Or is it specific to the 401.....and would they be interchangeable? off topic: Tarior, where are you at in sw WA?
