I had a question about the flywheel interchangeability with the 290s and 343s. I was led to beleive that these two engines were internally balanced when new. :-| I thought they would interchange, because neither of the two have counterweights on the flywheel. Now I've never seen a 290 flywheel but I have seen a 343 flywheel, so I don't know if there is a size difference. Am I making sense or am I way off on this assumption? 111!!!

Both are EXTERNALLY balanced. NOT interchangable. You can only interchange if you have the flywheel rebalanced or the entire rotating assembly rebalanced.
When they raised the block deck height in 1970, the 290 became the 304, and the 343 became the 360 (longer strokes), same rules apply.
