amckid6970 This find was to cool not tell, so here it is... When I was in the process of saving the 82 Cherokee I had found the original 360 had tossed a rod and was junk. I went looking for another 360 and had no luck in the first few months. Then while diving down a highway I found a junkyard with a 78 Waggie that looked like it had been beaten to death by 10 dudes with axes. So turned around and asked if it still had the motor and if it ran when parked. They said they drove it to where it was sitting and it ran great. This truck looked horrible, axe holes, sawzal sunroof, andbuckshot holes everywhere. I took a look at the VIN# and saw that it was a 360 2bbl which is exactly what I was looking for. So after buying the truck for 250 (wouldn't let me just snatch the motor 111!!! ) I had it dragged to a buddy's shop to snatch th motor. So I get everything out of the way to pull it and the last thing to come off was the carb. I pulled the carb and it had a spread bore iron 4bbl intake! So I quickly slid under the truck to find out the I just paid 250 bucks for a 401! :!: On top of that the truck only showed 129,000 miles on the clock and the 401 was a Jasper rebuild! There was nothing left of the truck besides the Q track running gear which I turned around and sold to a local 4x4 shop for 100 bucks to take the whole truck TH400 and all. R.I.P. 78 Waggie. I guess it goes to show there are still some pretty sweet finds in junkyards!
amckid6970 That's what my dad said when I told him. I had actually joked about how cool it would be if it was a 401 truck when a called dad about the VIN#.
amckid6970 Bummer... Was there anything left of the J20? I assume it's 4bbl 360? BTW, everytime I go looking for something I can never find what I'm looking for. It always happens when I'm not looking or I don't have the cash to buy it. :(: I'm kind of looking for a cab for a J10 that's still savable, I'm just not looking very hard maybe one will pop up like the 401 did.

fulsizjeep These kinda deals are still out there. We bought Krista's waggy in Ouray in 2000 for $100. 59K miles, all original. The tranny/qt was out laying in the back. For a total investment of $470 this classic 401 was running, tagged and insured. The only problem is any time I look at a potential FSJ to add to our fleet, it is tough to guage another deal when you get one so sweet as hers for $100. Then her dad gives us his 76 401 waggy fer nuthin 2 years ago. How can we say no? 111!!! 2 months ago, we picked up a 75 waggy with 401 and 118K for $500 AND drove it home. Engine, front drive line, left front shock tower, radiator and all the engine accesories are going to a friend for $400. Even that is a deal... :lo1l:
zero cool It's always good to find a deal like that. I found my complete Cherokee with a 401 for $400. Trouble is, the engine wasn't rebuilt... http://www.grimmjeeper.com/beavis
