My brother's jeep was making noises when he pushed the clutch so we pulled it apart this morning. I found that the crank can more linearly almost 1/8". This engine was rebuilt at one time. The main thrust bearing in it is located at the furthest forward bearing. I took one of my old 4.2s apart and found that the thrust bearing in it is on the 3rd from the front bearing. On the 4.0 it seems the thrust bearing is wider than the first bearing cap and that there is room for it on the 3rd bearing. Does anybody know for sure which bearing should be the thrust bearing?
