Hi all,
I have one that has me stumped - I rebuilt a 67 290 for use in my CJ - used the Bulltear timing chain cover, new Comp Cams 260H, new Comp Cam lifters and springs, new adjustable rocker studs. The engine now holds 25 psi at idle and up to 70 - 75 at highway speeds - but.... one of the lifters ticks - I have adjusted it down but it didn't help. At idle the tick comes and goes every couple of seconds. As the RPM rises it is like the lifter bleeds down and it ticks like crazy - as you let off, the lifter quiets down. This project is driving me crazy...I've had this engine apart so many times I think I could do it in the dark. If you have any ideas - please help.

Methinks bad lifter and/or camshaft. Maybe a bent pushrod?
brucel
I forgot to mention the lifter in question pumps oil through the pushrods just like the rest -

Bruce the camshaft might have a flat lobe

Oh no :(
- I hope not - this would be the second new cam.... I guess I'll find out tomorrow night.

What kind of rockers are you running?
brucel
I took everything apart - the cam is fine, the lifter looked ok (I still think maybe it was not) pushrod is straight - but the Cat Power stamped steel roller tip rocker had problems - they all do - the rocker balls are galling badly - these were listed for an amc application - the packing sheet I got with them said they were for a small block ford - but they looked right so I put them on. The balls are so worn (after 100 miles) they are unusable.
So my plan now is to change the oil and filter (again), get one new lifter and a new set of rocker arms - I was thinking stock but would appreciate any feed back on crane or comp cams rockers.... any comments on the plan? Anything else I should do?
Thanks
Brucel

if you can get the stock rockers, get them. it would be better if this is a stock rebuild. th company srewed up when they sent those to you. those rocker arms they sent were probably for a 289 or 302 ford. won't work
on an AMC. i'll see if i can find ya a set .i'll pm ya if i do.
