brucel
Hi all,
I'm new to the forums, but a long time AMC guy. This summer my 16 year old and I swappped in a low mile 67 290 (40,000) in his 77 cj5. After a full summer of driving it - the dreaded cam gear problem struck... anyhow after lots of attempts at fixes we finally pulled the engine and just rebuilt the whole thing (other stuff was worn also) - got my new timing cover from bulltear :-).
Anyhow, we have a machine shop in the small town I live in, but they don't install block plugs (I have no idea why) while installing the cam plug in the back of the engine I got it in a bit far (I think) probably 1/8" past the block surface. I slid the cam in, with the cam pushed all the way back, the front cam bearing sits slightly below flush - maybe 1/16 or even a little less...so, do I have a problem? Do I need to get a new cam plug and pound it in flush?
Incidently the plug I got with the block plug kit was to big at 2 5/32, the actual size is supposed to be 2 9/64, only a little but enough to make it possible or not.
Thanks for your help.
Bruce
