What would be a direct swap for the Q-trac t-case in my FSJ? It has a TH-400. I like the thought of a 205 or 208.
KEV
Nothing unless you change the trany output shaft.

sorry man
the main shaft in all TH400s used in front of the Q-trac case has a strange, coarse, loooooooong output shaft that only works with that transfercase
but good news
you have several options, you'll just need to dissasemble the tranny and swap in a different output shaft and then bolt whatever adapter matches up to the case your using. Your TH400 tranny is basically a chevy transmission internally.
you can find a HD Chevy 3/4 ton Suburban from the early 70s (like I did) that had the TH4oo/NP205 combo and take the output shaft, adapter and transfer case to mount into your jeep ( and axles and driveshafts to , if they're there, like I did)
an 80's HD GM truck had the TH400/NP208 combo that you can pirate as well
also, late 60's and early 70's FSJ's had a TH400/Dana20 combo that is a nice package. You can take the output shaft, adapter and T-case out of one of those trucks and swap it in also
this is just the tip of the iceburg, and theses aren't 'simple' swaps......but not to complicated either

Yeah, thanks, I was just hoping not to have to drop the trans, maybe I'll try and dig up a 700R4/208 combo.

Better yet, try to find an 89-91 700R4-NP241 combo from a Blazer/Suburban. Much stouter case than the 208. The 241 is the strongest chaindriven case ever produced.
I have the combo in my '91 Suburban and I've been thinking about swapping them into my Wagoneer instead. But, I just got a smokin' deal on a Dana300 T-case out of a CJ.
What to do what to do!
The 700R4 is a sweet decision to build tho
hope all goes well for you
Don't forget to check out Advance Adapters for the adapter to mount the 700R4 to your AMC V8
if you didn't already know.....

I would like to put a 700R4 into my Waggie, one of these days.

Just a shot in the dark in case you're looking
but a local guy here in Dallas has (2) rebuilt passenger side drop NP241 T-cases for sale. One is $350 and the other is $400.
and he also has a 700R4 to NP241 adapter for $45

Thanks, but it's not in my budget right now.

The Q-trac is a good unit. Might think about slapping a chain in it. There is also an excelent part time kit made by Mile Marker. These fixes might be a bit cheaper and a lot easier than a swap, given the rest of the unit is servicable(there is also an overdrive option).
