Wagy front Dana44 question

I'm sure this topic has been thoroughly discussed but I could find any info when I did a search. Basically I‚Äôd like to know what years did the Wagys come with the front Dana 44 with the driver side drop and what gear ratios did they come with? Like with 360 you had 3.07 and 3.54, with 258 you had 3.73 and 4.10 and so on. I‚Äôd like to put one on my YJ and want to know which is the best to get. Thanks to everyone who replies

The drivers drop was 82 and newer. Some had a vacuum disconnect, but it's pretty easy to tell by the odd shaped cover. Popular ratios were 2.87, 3.31, and 3.54. There may have been a 3.73 but they were rare, nothing from the factory in the 4s. Bob tufcj

i believe 1980 and up were all Drivers side drop Dana 44's. There is a guy on CT jeep that has a few sets right now forsale. I think the most common gears are 2.72 and 3.07, Not sure of the other options I could look when i get home tonight -Paul

This person in CT how much do you think he would want for a set of front and rear. Since I have a Dana44 in the rear from a cherokee I'm thinking of using the wagy shafts in the Cherokee housing. I'm I crazy for thinking this will work??? It just that its already set-up with 4.10 and a locker wouldnt want to start from scratch again.

If you're talking a small Cherokee (XJ), the front is a Dana 30. The Wagoneer 44 shafts are too long, too thick, and the outer stubs are different. Dana 30 (and 35) axles are 1.15" diameter 27 spline, Dana 44 axles are 1.31" diameter 30 spline. If you have a Cherokee Chief (2 door Wagoneer), take some measurements. The Chief axles were about 4" wider than the Wagoneers. Complete Wagoneer axle housings will bolt into a Cherokee, but the Wagoneer shafts won't fit a Cherokee housing. Bob tufcj

Tufcj, I was talking about using the Grand Waggy rear 44 shafts in the Cherokee rear 44 housing. I'm just not sure if they are designed the same length wise and if the backing plates are the same allowing me to swap shafts. The reason being getting the 6 on 5.5" in the back to match the front. Anyone think this will work?

i am pretty sure the shaft lengths are different. BUT the carrier and locker and everything from the XJ 44 will fit into the Waggy 44 -Paul

if from fullsize chero... narrow track and waggy the same, if widetrack cherokee, shafts are longer than waggy shafts.

So it looks like I'm going to take the Waggy shafts, cut them down and re-spline them. How about the rest are the backing plates the same or do I have to switch the backing plates from the XJ shafts on the waggy shafts?
