After doing a search I am still unclear as to the proper way to adjust the valves on a 304 with late 72 heads, stock lifters and cam with stud type rockers (not bridged) any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Unless you change to a Chevy style stud and nut, even the early heads are non-adjustable. The factory adjustment is to just torque the nut to something like 35-40 lb/ft. The nut seats against the shoulder on the stud.
On my AMX (390 w/1970 heads) I went to Crane gold roller rockers with ARP studs # 134-7104 (SBC application). They are a bolt in, and the rocker nuts and jam nuts are included with the rockers.
At that point, I adjusted them like a Chevy. Back off until they clack, tighten until quiet, then an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
