Water pump difference?

I have a 72 304 block and timing cover that is replacing the 74 304 in my cj and I was wondering what the difference was between a 72 water pump and a 73 and later pump. Thanks Brian

only thing I know is that some pumps have a higher boss on them for the mounting of PS - ault some come with the higher boss and some come with a spacer to use

Thanks Fuzz I know they both use the same gasket so your probably right. Im using all the auxillary parts off of the 74 so I think I'm going to buy a 73 and later pump for the 72 engine. Brian

Well I went to http://www.flowkooler.com/pump.php?pid=WP1781 and compared the specs of the two different pumps and found a 1/16 inch difference in hub height, a slightly different bolt patern and the inlet OD 1/8 inch larger on the 73+ pump.
