Ok I have this '82 amc eagle and i was just brainstorming what to do with it. I have a 360 that i was planning to swap in, the only problem then would be a transfer case. I would like a full time one like it has now, its chain driven 23-spline. How will that fare with the 360? should i swap to a 21 spline? Or a quadra-trac? Suggestions...

:-| Dunno - Rollen??? He's the only Eagle driver I know (well Eagle Jeeps anyway - I do know some 18 pilots  )
Anybody else have an input???

Another problem with a V-8 swap in an eagle is the fact that the front diff hangs from the engine block. The V-8 block doesn't leave you with any way to hang the front diff other than fabricating mounts (or solid axle conversion).

yeah i have some help to figure that problem out. Right now i'm getting other things in line before we kick that off.
Had a buddy of mine look at the t-case, and told him about whats in it. Said it should hold up as long as i'm not drag racin' it everywhere. Certainly is big enough!

For thelife of me I cant remember the model number on those...they were like np223's?

Hi All, I did that swap back in 1987 I installed a 304 in a 1982 Eagle wagon, the transfer case will hold up to all but the torquest engines. The engine/front axle mounts will be the hardest to fabricate. If I get a new camera this week I'll take some picks of the spare engine mounts I still have hanging around, I won't part with them as I still have a 1984 Eagle Limited that I bought new that the new project is going into. Basically the way I had to approach it was the mounts are a build up process as you have to install the axle under the engine as the engine is about 3/4 of the way in, then finish installing the engine. You have to cut the cross member that holds the hood latch and reinstall that with a refabbed bolt in peice. Headers will be custom fabricated as the steering rod gets real close to the left side of the head, I think I used CJ5 in frame headers, modified. It is a great swap from a sleeper to a all but full out road racer. My Oem service manual lists a 119 as the model of transfer case, I think its a single range as opposed to dual range of the wagoneer cases of that era. Good Luck ! Jeff

So it'll hold up to everything but "the torqiest of motors".....a 401 ur sayin?
You modified the headders?? :-| Would a set of shorty headers fit with no problem?
I was in contact with a guy from canada who was gonna make me some motor mounts to bolt right in. But he hasn't emailed me back in a while, so i'm left to dry there.
I know a mopar guy who's put a 318 in an eagle a few years ago, he's gonna help me out.

Whatever you do, just make sure to take lots of pics and post them some someone else doesn't go through the same aggrivation that you are!!

Well I can't say about a what a 401 would do, I know the 304 worked well and never had a drive line problem, back when I did it, there weren't may choices on headers so I worked with what I had, and of course the shorty headers didn't exist back then. Of course you'll never get all the recovery with shorty headers that you will with full length headers. Jeff

my 83 eagle wagon has an np-129 t-case. it is a part time case.
i can switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive. the np-119 is a full time awd setup.
the 129 or the 119 should be able to handle mild power uprates. i would go to an np-229 if you go bigger than a 360. what front and rear diffs do you have? my eagle has an amc 30 front and a 35 in the rear. the rear
being twin grip. the gearing is 2.35's. not good for off the line but good hiway gears.
MaxW
Yeah the eagles have D-30s in front, and 35s in the rear, I'm not sure that my rear axle is a twin grip tho. Being full time i dont know why it would need it anyway. And my rears have the 3.54 ratios, because it was a 4cyl.
As per the motor, the only upgrades i'm planning on is an intake and exhaust, and an HEI dist. and sometime in the future a throttle body EFI.
of course the motor is being rebuilt so maby 20 or 30 over on the bore.
? Should i look into taking the t-case apart just to check things out, a rebuild kit for that is like 250. :-| Once in a while when i was driving it i thought i heard the chain binding or somthing. Never slipped, never found any shavings. But was certainly the t-case making a light noise.
Ever hear a crotch rocket jamin' gears? And you can hear the drive chain slap a little each time? Sounded similar to that.... but different.

it would be a very good idea to have the t-case looked at . sounds like
you have excessive play in the drivechain from just plain old age.
when you drain the t-case make sure to check for any fluids other than what the book says the case should have in it.
