Holley intake best choice for 401? Update: not happy

Well I see it's been a while since this thread was posted - but for some reason it showed up as new? :-| But I'm so screwed up right now I don't care :?: :?: So what was the issue? :roll:

Also thinking about it (but I'm still screwed up :wink: ) I had a vacuum leak do that to me in a 327 4-bolt with the Torquer intake.

So what WAS the answer - or are you still looking??

Gosh i guess he'd tell me its impossible to run a HMV272 in a 401 then. LOL the 256 is small when in a 401 hence why it yeilds such great bottom end and mid range. disregard that guy on that part of this i dont think he understands AMC's very well. my hmv272 idles smooth at 20" of vacum with no jumping around. even my 284H held steady idle and vacum at 16" without jumping around.

Id be looking at the timing, and the carb a little more. you might try upping your idle to 750 rpm i run mine at 750-800 then when AC is on it idles at 700 and things are alot smoother you may have to recurve the HEI distributor also once you get the motor going your way

That Comp 256 isn't a big cam in a 304 for heaven's sake! You have a sticky valve or an overtightened rocker or valve/ignition timing issues or a vacuum leak or (god forbid) a flat cam lobe.

i just put a 401 in my 73 cj5 it was a used motor it is in decent shape but i rolled in a new set of bearings and timing chain it has a performer and 670 avenger as far as i know the cam is stock i had to go 3 steps lighter on the secondary spring :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: itll rip the skin off your teeth if you nail it you should definetly have decent power with yours id definetly ckeck your cam timing and for vacum leaks

Don't forget to check your power brake can for leaks too! Just my $.02

I was told that by far the best intake for a FSJ was the Holley Street Dominator.
So, after looking, watching, waiting, I finally scored one.
It should her this week sometime.

NOW...I read here that my dream intake is for a small bore engine. UGHHHH!!!
So, how will Holley Street Dominator with a 600cfm carb on a AMC 360 sporting a Summit K8600 cam perform in a FSJ?
(basically a J10 that will used a 90% DD, 5% occasionally towing, 5% light hauling)
What are the PROs and the CONs?

Mods, if this needs to be moved to a new post, let me know and I will do so.

I have a Street Dominator on the shelf. Keep it for a conversation piece, probably never put it on an engine I build. I found it on a Waggy 360 that was so grease covered that I couldn't even tell it was aluminum, but I could see it wasn't a stock design. Had a stock Motorcraft 4bbl on it with an adapter. Scraped it with a pocket knife to see it was aluminum, then took it off. Got it for $15 at the U-pull-it. Took it home and hit it with some super clean and the power washer before I even knew it was a Holley. The runners are VERY small and the runners are long. Good for velocity, but probably won't flow a big amount of air. Bob tufcj

I ran the Holley intake on the mildly built 401 in my Cherokee Chief with an HEI, Hedman headers, Napa MPG cam (identical grind to Performer AMC) and Holley 570-cfm Street Avenger carb. The engine ran GREAT! I could advance the timing to about 20* with no ping and it had gobbs of power all through the RPM range for a Jeep. The engine is still running around like that 5+ years later, down in Ohio. Current owner is on the IFSJA.org forums.

EDIT - I also was running the Torque-Plus intake Gaskets with this intake, as the stock baffle on the bottom would hit the valley pan gasket. www.torque-plus.com
