$449 for a complete 360 rebuild kit 9:1 compression ratio IIRC other wise Forged pistons are 6 bills or stuff the 343 pistons in there and you'll have 10.5:1
I would think to Look for a Cam with a slightly wider lobe seperation 112-116, and around the duration @210-220 @ .50 and close to .480-.500 lift. even with stock compression so there is an Extra $150 so have Howards or someone grind one
I dont know what your hook up is for rebuilt heads but my last set was $700 done springs, keepers, locks and seals with reground seats and replaced valves where needed
Air Gap intake is $240
HEI distributor (if you dont have one) can be had for $250
Throttle body injection can be had for $1200
With 9:1 compression a cam somewhere in the middle of that suggested range and the few other parts your rebuild will cost you $1300 Block Machine work probably $500 so you are in it $1800 mark Add in the intake and the Distributor (dont know what you have fo r a carb) you will be able to count on a 350/360 hp 400 ft/lbs animal that bolts back in for right at $2300. Add FI later on for the 1200 and now for 3500 you are up and running. there are cheaper ways to do it, typically to rebuild a chevy SB it costs me within $200 of what an AMC costs me and i get he same HP numbers out of either engine. I get tired of swaps its not a die hard thing like i make it sound sometimes.
The LS motors are great but i usually get fed up with the transmission headaches, t-case, starter clearance, new exhaust, new motor mounts and getting the damn headers ordered right so i have a set that will clear enverything on the way down. Then with the LS's are the wiring woes. the TBI conversion is cheap and only has a handful of wires that you have to mess with
After stuffing a 454 into a Wagoneer, we paid $2200 for with 30k miles on it, then wiring the MPFI in. Getting a rebuilt T400 that would bolt up and t-case was another $1300 done with some bells, the T400 for a GM didnt exactly bolt up to the QT and i didnt want it to so a 208 was used which required new drivelines at $175 an end ($350total), Radiator was $350, then we had to battle motor mounts and tranny crossmember, hoses, AC stuff and misc parts tallied in around $700 and a new exhaust system ran me $500. Dont forget that you have to drop the fuel tank and add the fuel pump ($100) but we wont count that since it also applied for the TBI conversion.
All tallied, steel, motor mounts, said and done on the road it cost close to $5400 to do it and do it right the tranny swap and t-case swap were what killed the deal. power was nice though but what really drove that guy nutz was i built a 360 (just like i suggested above) not too long after that didnt have MPFI only had a carb but pulled the hills with a loaded trailer just as well as his did and got about the same mileage and was pretty close to as snappy.
Just food for thought
Im with Jack though i hear ya, just wanted to throw this stuff back at you because saying it costs a fortune to rebuild a 360 isnt as bad as many machine shops make it sound
