I got this off the Jeep-L..... :shock:

If my intuition serves me, I believe he is hauling on a converted camper
frame as well. I think they are rated for about 1000 pounds but he probably
decked it with super extra heavy duty load rated particle board under those
rotted cracked planks.

Wow that must tow like a dream 111!!! . Towing with an Xtera, 90% of the weight forward and 5 300# straps for a 3000# jeep. Yep he is bright person :roll:

Holy cow.. what a Dink. I see things like this all the time and I am constantly amazed. If I were to put that jeep up on my Commercial Flatbed, I have to have 4 5400 lb straps and chock it. yet this hero has the equivalent of bailing twine and buble gum and probably is wailing down the highway at 85 mph. And even if he is pulled over this "rig" will never be checked.. sheesh and they wonder how wrecks happen. Another Goose'ism Bad Luck is just stupidity with Pretty paint.

dont get me started on the things i used to run into hotshotting and trucking around this country. and i was usually the one they would pull over and inspect not all the other morons.. :(: Darwin award winner Rant on And i dont care what the susposed specialists ..........JP, POR and petersons 4WD all say about hooking to the Frame and needing to compress the suspension. Since they came out with that article on how to trailer a rig i saw more and more rigs horribly loaded and loosely tied down or with ratcheting 10k straps to thier frame holding them to a trailer as the axles/tires hopped all over the deck of the trailer. majorly illegal and i saw numerous rigs over the years come loose either partialy on thier trailer with guys trying to reload them or the few that had made it completely off the trailer between the Moab area and CA. and on top of that thier method also lends itself to strap stretch and looseing of chains or straps (how many times do you have to retighten?) That will not work when the deck of your trailer is icy or covered in solid ice, and you can not compress its suspension enough to truelly tie the load securely to the trailer. the only way is a double crossed chain onto the axle housing close to the pumpkin so as not to leverage the tubes and bend them and to prevent the tube from moving horizontally in the crossed cahins and providing enough pull to work agians the other cahin at the other end of the vehicle. With this you could be opn 1" of solid ice and never have the chains come loose nor the vehicle move off of the trailer even if you flip over Some staes now require 4 tie downs or 2 per loaded axle (if you are dollying) for this i would then throw a safety strap (ratchet strap) over the pinion just to please the local LEA's. I used to load then 5-10 minutes later plan my first fuel stop check tightness rarely had to retighten more than 1 or 2 turns of the ratcheting chain binder and would run 1000-2000 miles and Never had one get loose on me after that. Peterbilt and John Deer had a very specific proceedure as did my insurance carrier for chaining things down to the trailer for a lost load to be covered. it included the requirement that the axle and tires as one unit must be. Rant off I know i have issues :(:

Well you may have issues (won't go there :shock: ), but I guess I'm still confused. I've tried the wheel only tie down with a '56 Caddy Limo and it bounced around so bad the trailer moved!!!

I used a straight tiedown (not crossed) on the Waggie axles (by the knuckle) and still got bounce, but not as bad (the suspension was probably better than a 49 year old caddy that had been in storage for 25 years).

But you say not to use the recovery points on the Jeep (CJ) to tie it down to keep it from bouncing?

I have issues and one of them is still confusion #-o

you can use secondary straps to the chassis to tie it down and try to limit the bouncing, i never cared about a little body roll and hop so long as the axles and tires were firm and crossed it unless a binder came loose the chains links looped and crossed and wrapped around the pumpkin prevents any slidding of the chains on the tube thus preventing sideways movement and the forward and out angle of the chains with binders keeps the forward and aft movement in check while also exerting doward force on the rubber. its almost like suspending something but with enough doward force that it becomes oenwith the trailer deck. i'll have to snap a shot of how i was instructed to do it and have yet for the body and chassis roll and wiggles to get the tires to move anywhere on my deck. i wasnt trying to give a lesson i just felt like venting about that article since i always felt it gave some ok ideas but also stated that chaining to the tubes was bad yet is required by some manufactures and by some state DOT's go figure.... lol remember i have issues......... :razz: no best not to go there

Seems that would be like standing in the middle of a long board between 2 saw horses at each end (not that I have EVER have done that :oops: ) But you get the picture ... the board bends in the middle much like (I think) an axle under 5-8K pounds of tension would. I can see the crossed chains to control lateral movement. But wouldn't coming off the spring perch area be better? Or is that what you ment with the cross over close to the diff?

The way i was told by doing it right at the pumpkin and the loop and crossing of the chains at the pumpkin the tubes have no leverage so they can flex, pull out or bend as easily as they would when you tie down to the outer lengths of the tubes like by the spring hangers. what i gathered it had to do with the amount of structural strength at the area wher e the tubes are pressed in vs the strength of the tubes further out yes it is like the 2x12 analogy. but because the tires come into play that becomes a non issue. 111!!! It all started the night i walked in on that cheating lying skank........ now all i see are Guns, chain binders and AMC motors 111!!! I swear Doctor i never saw that cadaver before.
