I am confused about carb spacers. I am getting close to finishing my 401 and was thinking about a carb spacer for it. I found one at a local parts store. Its a 4 hole, plastic like (dont know how to spell that P word) carb insulator/spacer. Its one inch thick. What has got me confused is some people tell me they are good for high rpm's but hurt your low end, while other people tell me they boost low rpm power/torque. Who is right?

it can depend alot on the motor it self

I have dyno'ed lots of different engines in all kinds of configurations from full tilt race to mild street engines. As a general rule, and I hate to use that word 'rule', a 1" carb spacer will help just about every combination at some point. There is a possibility of it hurting in about 20% of the cases at some point in the power curve, but not overall. The only AMC I have ever seen that did not respond to a spacer was a bone stock '79 360 with an Edelbrock Performer and a Carter 9626. Watch for signs that indicate changes in jetting and timing (Read the plugs) to optimize the change.
There are lots of factors that effect the outcome, so to be truthful, it is a try and see situation.

Engine is a 401 I am about a week away from putting together.
Engine in a nutshell: 40 over, stock compression, comp 252h cam, everyting balanced/weight matched (roatating assembly that is) holley street dominator intake, 670cfm truck avenger, stock manafolds and 2.5in single exhaust. Trying to build it for low end/midrange power. Its gonna be hooked to a T-18.
