Wag axles?

OK, WTF???

Got off the phone with Mark and he can't find ANYBODY that can say if these are Waggie or street car axles.

I know it's a full width axle - 54.5 flange-to-flange, but the axle shafts are 2-piece. Pressed on hubs (you can see the splines on the hub end in this pic) with a weld bead on the outside between the hub and axel.

After finding a spun spline on the long side, I'm looking to replace with one piece axles - alloy or stock (for now) I'm only running 35's.

Who can tell me what this frigg'n thing is???

It's a 29 spline shaft with a pressed hub that has been welded on the outside where a 1/2" breaker bar can fit to turn the axle.

The tube end has the bolt pattern of an FSJ and the brake parts I bought fit it??

The only FSJ axles that had a 2-piece design were the old Dana 44s used in pre-70 Wags. However, they had a 19 spline axle so I don't know what you have there.

6 x5.5 from a 20 (has the round cover). What I (we) think happend is whomever "built" this axle used something that wasn't supposed to be there. If you look at the splines - they didn't go all the way into the diff.
The short side measures 24- 7/8 from inside the pig to the flange, the long side is 25- 1/4. I'm pulling the pumpkin apart tonight and look at the splines on the inside to see if their norked too.

The way I understand some of the 70's cars had 2pc axles. I never had one, and the Jeep Parts list I have (1981-1996) doesn't list them? It shows 35's, 44's and 60's doesn't even list the AMC 20 (either version) even for the old CJ's that came with them? :idea:
Figure 3-3300 (81-86) and 3-1700 (91-93) is the closest pic I can find, but they say it's for a D44 for an SJ?? Doesn't give measurements 🙁:

What I found though was the AMC-20 in an SJ had 29 (84-86) while the 44's had 30 splines (71-90) (I have 29 - yes I counted 3 times)
Something else I'm finding - the measurements for the some axles are different? One site says 28.5 & 31.5 long O/A, another say's 27.75 and 29.25 O/A WTF??? And the D44 for the W/T is listed at 33.5"??

Which brings up what "Over All" really means - from the inside of the flange to the end, from the start of the splines to the WMS????

And, I've been to the last 2 IFSJ Invasions in NC as well as an occasional guest here. My question though is about a set of "Waggie" axles I picked up. The front is a hi steer D-44 and the rear was sold as a 'Wagie D-44' but looks more like a 20 with the round pumpkin cover. The PO is clueless and said, "They are ready to run" when I bought them - HA!!! Badly botched disc brake conversion not withstanding!!! I've looked at the tech board and various other sites trying to ID what these really are. I've measured everything but the ring gear (want to check wear pattern before I pull it. The only marks on the diff are on top, nothing on the webbing or stamped in the right tube. Here are the specs ... Cast on top, into the diff, looking from the rear forward, are - top to bottom: - (large) N - (filled circle) 262 - 1@3235428 - No cast marks on the web and no stamps on the P-side tube? - The tubes are 2.75, turned down .055 where they enter the diff (2.695") P-sidetube between the flange and diff is 18.5" D-side is 18.375" (18-3/8") total width flange-to-flange is about 53.75" (the tape measure was bending around the gears so I estimated) And the diff from tube neck-to-neck is about 16.5" The right (p-side) tube is 18.5" and D-side is 18.375" (18-3/8") Right now it has 4.56 lockers in it so the missing ratio tag is a mute point. I have the sinking feeling this is not an AMC rear axle. It is a 6 x5.5 wheel pattern with a round cover. What I think happend is whomever "built" this axle before used some axles that weren't supposed to be there. Looking at the splines - they didn't go all the way into the diff. From inside the pig, the short side measures 24-7/8 to the flange, the long side is 25-1/4. But the long side splines are spun and I need to replace them and pull the gears to see if the inside splines were damaged too. Just don't know what replacement axles and bearings to buy? Mudrat, looks like AMC 20. The 2 piece axles are one of the weak points of them. Is the rear diff round, if so it is a 20. I have a buddy with a 20 in a cj7 with a built 360 and he destroyed it while doing a wheelstand (on the street). From what I understand if you put aftermarket 1 piece axles in it they are as strong/stonger than a 44. The R&P is alot meatier than a 44 as well. Gabe

That's what I thought at first, and I'm 99% sure it's a 20 (my stock 20 is from an 85 CJ7). But, I can't seem to find axle shafts that are the same length as the housing? I've measured from 3 different places on the axles and can't seem to match the lengths anybody is selling? Plus, looking at the ID guides for an AMC20, my pumpkin and tubes don't have the "typical" narkings?
i'm stil confused - I need replacements, but don't know which to buy because the measurements??

ok so you say 54.5" from flange to flange....then what is it from wheel mounting surfaces? It may be out of a j10 but it also may be out of a cj7 (wide track) ....either way superior or moser make these axles to any custom width you need.

Last time I measured, when I first put them under there to fill the void somebody created before he headed back to MN :wink: I'm right at 63" WMS, stock wide track should be 62.5, right?? I've dissassembled the rear and pulled the axles to measure them so It may be a day or two to put things back in place, bolt it up to remeasure while it's on the workbench.
I still have my original CJ's 20 under the Jeep with Superior 1pc. in it, but the "waggie 20" is supposed to have bigger shafts - and being the typical male - longer and bigger round. Right? Tell me if I'm wrong, bigger is better :t:

I went looking for some gear marker to check the alignment and wear pattern on the diff before I pull it - out of 5 parts houses around me, nobody has any 🙁:
Time to just spray some yellow paint I guess ;-)

Nope - no tags, no stamps - just what's cast into the top.

Marking compound go to one of the craft stores and get some yellow ocher or yellow finger paint it is the same thing.

The Model 20 in FSJs came in 3 different widths '80 to mid '88 (when they ran out and Chrysler took over. The design was rendered to Humvee who put Torsen posi system in) Narrow track (all 4 drs and most 2 drs w/o flares) Wide track (most 2 drs with factory fender flares) Pickup (J10s. J20s got D60)
