thanks bob. was looking to see if someone had one for sale before i spend that much. i want to keep the motor but parts are getting hard to find. i can rebuild 2 chevy motors for what it will cost to do the 401 justice. it's a 72 alot of hard running on it. maybe retire it and go a different route.
thanks again

I built a 304 for my CJ when I used to mud bog. Balanced, high compression, bigger valves, radical cam, etc. Used to spin it to 6500-7000. Surprised a lot of people who expected to see a SBC when I raised the hood. It cost more, but it was a novelty to have an all AMC Jeep beating out the SBC powered vehicles.
Where are you located? I'm always interested in storing another 401 if it can be had for the right price.

if in the western states i'll help you find a home for that 401 :t:
Parts arent as hard as you think. If your timing cover is good a full rebuild kit with high compression 9.8:1 forged speed pro pistons, cam oil pump gears, all seals ect from mad dog racing on ebay is $700 throw in a wilder stick for an extra 100 if you want. A cast piston kit costs $400 or $450 (last i checked those kit prices were pretty close to comparable kits for a chevy within $200)
Heads cost the same to rebuild as a set of Chevy heads, so i wont go into that.
If you want to become creative
-roller rockers are easy to get as they are 1.6:1 ratio rockers and the pushrods to use if you go with roller rockers are .010 longer chevy pushrods summit sells em for $40.
-The HEI conversion distributors can now be had for something like $250
-Intake, an air gap intake runs $230
You have to shop around a little as the local performance and engine shops really hose you on rebuild kits for amc motors especially the 401. my local shop quoted me a stock rebuild kit for $900 for cast stock pistons and 1500 for forged speedpro piston kit. i just had them do the machine work and bought the rest of my stuff through MC/bulltear or mad dog racing and i built my 401 for $267 more than my buddy built his 350 chevy. FYI two almost identically built motors roller rockers, forged pistons ARP bolt kits all around, aluminium intakes & i had to buy a timing cover and added in the lifter valley oil bypass.
The difference HP and torque plus the novelty of all AMC under the hood and i have a forged crank and rods with the 401.
Food for thought
