need help picking cam

any ideas on what cam to run in 78 360 for my cj5.i am looking for somthing around the summit 8601 cam(that i just wiped out after about 150 miles).it is a 360 with edelbrock aluminum heads ross 10 to 1 pistons it bored 30 over.i am running 3.55gears with a 36 inch tire i know it is steep but i cant aford a regear for along time so i need to work with what i got.the 8601 worked very well but with all the bad stuff i see about summit cams and now that i wiped this one i think i am going to steer away from them.i race in the mud and also a little street driving.any ideas.i need to try to get this done before next weekend so i can make the mud bog.thanks.

Why'd you wanna wipe out a cam? That's one of the things that make us go tick, tick, tick??? :razz:

Dunno why your cam went south? I'm putting an 8600 in mine primarily for street use, but if you had the oiling holes and the cam bearings lined up - I REALLY don't know why this happend 111!!! Was it hte main cam beraings or up at the timing gear?

well i cant let summit take the heat for this one.i called summit tech support and found out that my valve springs are way to heavy for their cam.this would expain why i have broke to rocker studs also.my fault for not doing my homework i guess.summit tech support was very good and even made me a deal on a new cam and lifters and valve springs and retainers.expensive mistake yes,learning experience yes.it still piss's me off that these heads claim to be bolt on power right out of the box.sorry to bother you all with my mistake.but big thanks for all the help.mudrat i read your post about the 8600 cam this is the one i was running in my 360 before the rebuild and it was very good nice power all around and it opened the top end up alot over stock.

Did you call Edelbrock? they are supposed to 115# at the seat, the first batch they ran they didnt cut the seats down deep enough :oops: i had the same problem mine were 140-145#'s at the seat, i complained about the pressure and they diddnt believe me, i sent them back to edelbrock and they tested em and reground the spring seat a little deeper appologized etc. Did you have a probelm with coolant seepage out of the rear corners of your Edelbrock heads? i thougth id run it through a few heat cycles and see if everything seated up but after 4 times running it it started to leak, now it appears im going to have to try re-torquing the head bolts first then a may end up pulling the heads for a HG job :(: only seeps when the motor cools off and sits for a couple of days doesnt do it when i run it daily go figure :-| hoping its just a few bolts that have loosened up some.

no i did not call edelbrock YET.yeah i did have the seeping in the back corner but it stopped so i dont know what that was all about.did you retorque your heads after the first run.

No i didnt, after the first run was i supposed to? My heads came with no instructions nor specs i was kinda disappointed int eh information that was provided with them, they didnt even include flow numbers
