My only gripe about first firing up of my 401

:(: The fuel injection pump was not able to siphon enough fuel to keep it going after 2-4 minutes then she dropped down to 1200-1500 rpm and for the next 10 minutes wouldnt rev up past that. took us that long to chase the problem and tools down to check everything, even then we couldnt do anything about it finally got it to rev back up to 2200 ran it for 20 min there at least tried to do it right but it was beyond our control. so hopefully i didnt bugger a lifter or cam i will find out soon enough. she had alot of assembly lube on her and the oil pressure was pre primed and at 30psi at idle 50-55 psi at 1500rpm with 5w/30 for the breakin oil now shes 10/30w so i'll cross my fingers. if she did she scuff herself nothing i can do about it now but wait hope and see if it comes out ok. So what did i learn about the Edelbrock EFI or any efi setup.... Go buy a chevy in the tank pickup, sending unit and pump assembly and install it in your tank, open up your hole just a little and it will work save yourself the headache that i am in the process of straightening out :(: Even with the fuel manifold and the holly pump feeding the manifold ect the system starves out after a short period of time, lifting the fuel up and out of my tank which is below the pumps which are mounted to the lowest point on my frame rail is just too much for them. There were several suggestions from edelbrock and others that suggested putting the pump on a bracket that hangs down lower in different locations like over the top of the axle or what not, in the end i think the right way might take you a little more time but the results will be better

Are you running stock fuel lines, or did you run new ones? My Howell system said you could run the factory 5/16" feed and 1/4" return, but they highly recommended 3/8" feed and 5/16" return (which I did). I ran a short time with an in line fuel pump (which should be mounted as close to the tank as possible), then upgraded to the GM style in-tank pump when I upgraded my tank (Trail Quest 22 gal). Check also to make sure you're getting the recommended pressure at the rails. I've seen new pumps fall short right out of the box. Bob tufcj

Hey bob ive got the trailquest tank also but i notched mine 2.5"x2.5" and inserted a piece of angle which allowed me to with my 1" body lift raise the tankall the way up to the point that only 7" of it hangs down below the frame. my stock 15 gallon and skid hung down 6" so i thought that was a handy mod. still holds 21 gallons. Originally when i got the tank i was going with carburator. I did run new fuel lines 5/16 and 3/8's. the line pressure is good when the pump is gravity fed out of a gas can that sits higher than it and will run the system. its only when i hook it up to the tank which is full that starves for fuel. I think you are right about pumps being bad out of the box. Trailquest told me a stock GM pump wouldnt fit nor work in my application so i was all worried (lack of sump ect they said) then i got to looking around and found quite a few guys have installed stock GM suburban/ or turkc pickips w/ GM sending units and fuel pumps and they fit into the trailquest hole/ and also the stock CJ hole with minor mods and meet the 55-60psi / 60 gph requirements of the mpfi system and have had years of flawless service just dont run it down really low. I hope to never get down to 4 or less gallons in my tank anyways so i should be ok thats what jerry cans are for right. Thank you for the tips though too. Did you cut or make an access panel in your floor for reaching your tank and the cover for your fuel pump or do you just plan on dropping the tank if the pump ever dies. I think dropping the tank is an easy option

I thought you were supposed to use a straight 30w non-detergent oil for an engine break-in or the rings won't seat ?

dont know about that one? far as i can tell on past motors have had not problem. Figured out why i had so much crank pressure... the 90degree elbow i used for my breather line into the air filter had casting in it was solid in the middle of the 90 degree. hmm that could explain why i had oil pushing out of every orfic on this thing. Damn piss poor quality control

The Howell TBI only requires about 14-16 PSI, but I was told the pump in mine is factory GM. The shop I bought it from set it all up with pump and sender so all I had to do was bolt it up and connect lines and wires. I had trailquest weld their brackets 1" lower than stock, so mine tucks up nicely with the 1" body lift. I probably could have gone another 1". I figure I'll just drop the tank if there's ever a problem. An access panel wouldn't do me much good, because I have a large parts/tool/storage lockable compartment bolted in where the back seat used to be. Bob tufcj
