carlos1a I hoping to wait this one out but I'm not convinced yet. My father, who has rebuilt many engines over the years is not too concerned yet, but I am getting there. My CJ-7 has an AMC 360 that was just recently rebuilt (around 300 miles on it so far). It was bored .030" over, .020" on the crank and .010" on the rods. There are absolutely no oil leaks but it burns oil and I'm thinking rings not seated properly. I let the machine shop build the short block so I do not know anything about how they assembled their part of it. I would assume that they knew what they were doing, more than I would have. But you never can be too sure. Can I expect that it will continue to burn oil? I can only esitmate that I need to add a quart for every 60-80 miles driven. Almost forgot, The oil pressure is excellent.
jeepsr4ever OK Did you install a valley pan?? I am willing to bet your pcv is sucking up all the oil. Take the line off the back of the carb and take a look.
fuzz401 and if you changed intakes did you take the pan off the old intake and put it on the new intake
carlos1a I didn't even think of that. I installed the aftermarket oil line kit to get oil to the rear main. In doing that, the instructions said to cut the valley gasket to accomodate the oil line. I, not knowing how to cut it, just cut the middle out of the valley pan and made what I would consider (2) standard intake gaskets out of it. From what you are telling me, I may need to buy another one and find a way to install it intact. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Chip
tufcj There is a tin oil baffle riveted to the bottom of the factory manifold. It should be transferred to the aftermarket manifold. You need to have that, or the valley pan (or both) in place to stop oil from being splashed onto the bottom of the manifold, and sucked into the PCV system. A quart for every 50-60 miles is excessive, even for a new motor. I've had them burn a quart in 500 or so until the rings seat, generally 1000-2000 miles. I'm also assuming you had the heads done, with new seals installed, and new or knurled guides? Generally the umbrella style seals are worthless after 60-70K miles. Bob tufcj
Lifted79CJ7 Yup - that be it! I sold my factory 4bbl manifold years ago. So ya wanna part with that one? Jack PS-Nice socks! 8)
