Dana 60 - which one ?

I hear there are heaps of different dana 60's around, i have an FSJ which has an amc 20 in it , which i plan pulling out , dropping in a modified dana 60 from a f250-350 or dodge from a salvage yard. i hear there are high pinions, low pinions , 30 spline , 35 spline , HD versions , 8 stud , 6 stud , etc, etc , etc - the list go's on . I am seeking an 8 stud version that i intend converting to disk brake ( rear ), does anyone know which is the most desired dana 60 , or which is best suited for a FSJ ( which numbers should i look for )?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? cheers Rick

I believe a full floating 35 spline is the most desirable D60 rear axle. You could find a d60 Full Floating 30 spline in 1 ton FSJ's with 8 lug bolt pattern, and if you wanted to beef it up you could convert it to a 35 spline -Paul

Only high pinion D60's i know of are in the front ends of Fords. For rear ends Mopar and Jeep had 35 spline 5 on 5.5 rear ends All others that are full floaters are 8 lug 30 spline D70's came with the 35 spline full float, i have yet to find a 35 spline full float dana 60. The semi floaters exist out there and there are some 8 lug semi floaters. never have i seen a 6on 5.5 lug d60 semi floater there was the 6 lug international large 6 pattern that came way back in the 60's also earlier D60's had 16 splines ford in the late 60s had a semi float 5 on 5.5 d60 with 30 spline shafts thatsbout sums it up The D60 std housing the pumpkin has very little webbing the D60 HD came in the back of some hd 250 dodges like the old crew cab dodges it had substantially more webbing said d60hd in the casting and the tube diameters and thickness' are much heavier. they are few and far between all were 30 spline

Be careful of dana 60's from ford's, I grabbed one and it ended up being a dana 61.

Thanx for all that information , very handy indeeed. I was wondering if you can convert a High pinion front Dana 60 front to the rear ? has it been done before ( sure it has ) , how wouldi go about doing it ?

Drill welds remove Tubes press new tubes in.

I hear the model 78-79 F250-350 Dana 60 High pinion is the best Dana 60 to get ( front ), have many people converted a front drive axle to the rear and had good rusults ???

I rin HP60 front and rear.

The front is a retubed 78/79 Ford front that is narrowed to 62" the rear is a 2000 Ford HP front FF 8 lug 35 spline axes in the rear. 60" WMS.
