Looking for input. I have a 455 on the line and pondering putting it in my 82 J20. Now before you start bashing me for not using a AMC motor it's a Buick (remember the late 60's and early 70's)not a Chevy.
Issue being I want to have overdrive, I have a divorced T-case on the shelf so a 2wd trany will also work.

I think AA makes the adapter ring for putting a 700R4 behind that motor. build the hell out of the tranny. there is your od next i would run a married t-case if possible.
Also have seen the T400 with Road ranger unit between the tranny t-case i think that was how it was rigged up or it was bolted onto the output of the transfercase anyways my vot is for a 700r4 simple clean easy one unit not three

Go for it !With 540 factory ft lbs on tap [depending on year] you have a killer grunt motor there!First car i had was a 70 skylark 455 stage 1 and couldnt keep tires on it!Couldnt afford the gas either mind you !

Buick 455 looks like it could be a "big block" AMC. :-|

Here's a link with a short overview of the engine pictured:

Heck YA!! There is no substitue for cubic inches!! Torque RULES
I would slap that puppy in and have a blast!
Oh and if you jump to advance adapters website they should have adapters for that. just keep in mind your making "Tractor" torque..whatever goes behind it should be stout, turbo 400 comes to mind and I wouldn't worry about the divorced t-case as long as it's well mounted.
(Just remember grasshopper, "The bigger your Gashole the more it takes to fill it")

there is no replacement for displacement!!!!!!!!had a buick estate wagon
with a 375 horse 540ftlbs of torque. it was a 1970.we switched to a
turbo 350 trans cause 2nd gear kept going out in the turbo 400.still
pulled a chris craft 28 foot cabin cruiser (built out of wood) from
newport beach to sandpoint idaho. never stressed out on long climbs.

Still have not got around to this project, things keep piling up in front of it. I'm thinking a divorced T-case will work to my advantage since it has a lift. The front shaft is plenty steep now but I might swttch to a HP Ford front since I have a few of them.

I was reading an article today that detailed a Buick buildup, turns out they really are alot like AMC's: Excellent heads on a marginal bottom end and weak oiling system 8)

the bottom end is a 4 bolt mains but the oil passages suck! too small
for such a big engine. with better oiling i could have got 375000
miles instead of 250000 miles.
