401 in cj7

How hard is it to put a 401 from a J20 into a CJ7 frame? Is this block the same as a 304? Thanks :idea:

Yup, it will bolt right up. Just make sure that you have the right flexplate/flywheel to balance the AMC 401 - the 304 one will not work. Other than that, it is a direct swap!! Let us know if you need more help!! Jack

Cool! I found a 74 J20 for 250$. Body is gone but I don't need that. Will have to rebuild the 401 tho. Now to figure out what mods to do to the engine. :?

Well picked it up. Not bad. Set for 6 years. Has headers on it with motorcraft 2 barrel carb. Custom dual tanks. Because original rusted out :t: Anyone need parts for a j20? :roll: Defintely a complete rebuild. I am on my way. Hope to get the repaired frame back this comming week and put the lockers in and I am ready to start the engine. =D>

Are you sure it's a 401? Did you look under the motor mount (displacement is cast into the side of the block)? There should also be a metal tag on the front of the right valve cover with the letter "Z" on it, and the 7th digit of the vin should be "Z". The reason I ask is that all 401s came from the factory with 4BBL carbs. Not to say a 2BBL couldn't have been swapped on, but it's just a question that needs more investigation. Bob tufcj

Yes, but they also cast in the engine size. Sould say on the block, 401, 360, 304.

Good point I will have to check it out tonight. I just took the guys word for it. Plus it was a good buy either way. Here is a pic of the top end.

she's red......... am i right in thinking either she was rebuilt or she came out of an Intertrational which would explain the red paint and 2bbl carb. ????????

When they rebuild my 360 it came back red also. Not really please with that but I didn't get it done, the PO did so when I go to put it back in I will paint it the right color.

Oh, and like was said, lucky for getting it so cheap..... 8)

that definitely a AMC motor. Like said no matter what it is it is a good score. And the tag that TUFCJ was talking about appears to be missing unless it is on the other valve cover, if i remember correctly they are usually on the front of the passenger side

Also i believe Trailbst on the board could use those marker lights of the front grill, if they are not broken. Might want to pm him about it.

No no, i agree its amc, but international used the 401 for a few years in thier trucks and the only difference was the carb/intake were 2bbl. but it was amc 401. i also remember them being painted red by international but could be wrong

Checked the VIN. I have the title and it says it is a 401. THe carb is a four barrel. I had to blow the squirrel nest out and count :(: =D> . The jeep is all original. The title is from 79 so this guy bought it when it was 5 years old. Tried to start it. It turns over but doesn't seem to wanna fire. I'll try once or twice more then just yank it. Thanks for all the help. :t:
