Got a 1976 CJ5 with an AMC 304ci engine and a manual trans. The two holes on the bellhousing are not threaded. One bolt hole on the starter is, the other isn't. If you were to thread the hole in the bellhousing, it would end up being about a 1/2-20 bolt which would be too big for the starter. My question is, does a flanged threaded bushing go in here? I thought about a bolt with a nut, but there's not much room for it and it would have to be a shoulder bolt to work well. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How it is setup stock is one of them threads into the starter and the other into the bellhousing. If infact you have no threads in either hole (your sure) then you can use a threaded rod or you will need to helicoil the holes...

Maybe someone "pulled" the thread out of the bell housing.
The upper starter bolt should go through the housing and thread into the starter.
The lower, through the starter into the housing. If it's in the vehicle, then a longer bolt with a nut on the back side of the bell housing should work just fine.

Thanks guys. I'll do the bolt with a nut on it. BTW, this was a new bellhousing. Just not used to seeing a nut/bolt combo on a starter.
