Hello.
I'm acquiring a 401, and was wondering what you all think of the combo- anything best changed before it's installed.
.030 over w/ Speedpro (?) forged pistons
external cam gear lube tube, rerouted valley line to #4
291C heads, 3 angle, stock ports... leaving 10.8:1 CR
full roller rockers and hardened pushrods no guideplates
ssi 224/234 @ .050, .496I .521E don't know lobe sep. or centerline
Torker w/ Commander 950 TBI 900cfm
stock forged bottom end, ARP rod bolts, main studs, balanced
curved Unilite
No headers yet- what size? I'd like some rpm, and would a 200 shot be OK on this? If the heads get ported that is. I have another set of 64cc (?) heads that have been opened way up w/ larger valves, and lower CR of course, would they be a better choice?
HP/ Torque predictions?
Thanks, this looks like a cool forum.
ol' school power
How are you going to put this engine to use?
That usually dictates cam and compression. Mid 10's on the c/r is overboard for street usage and fuel won't be cheap.
Heads didn't go up to 64 cc.

Street/strip motor. I'm at 5000 feet, the track is 5800, so the engine runs on 91 octane. The ported heads started at 58cc but measure 64cc now.

nobody?? Jeepsr4ever, what do you think?

ok here is my take
.030 over w/ Speedpro forged pistons :t:
external cam gear lube tube, rerouted valley line to #4 :confused1: ..dont need to do those...run some .201 hole cam bearings.
291C heads, 3 angle, stock ports... leaving 10.8:1 CR :t:
full roller rockers and hardened pushrods no guideplates ..you will need guideplates AND hardened pushrods :t:
ssi 224/234 @ .050, .496I .521E don't know lobe sep. or centerline
Torker w/ Commander 950 TBI 900cfm ....better watch what cam you use as these intakes dont START to make power untill they hit 3500
stock forged bottom end, ARP rod bolts, main studs, balanced
curved Unilite :t:
For headers...you could chop up a set of hedmans...however thorley and hooker and edelbrock all make a decent (some more than others) header set.

So would I be better off with the 291C's or the other, ported heads?
How about the engine holding up to nitrous?
This is like pulling teeth....

Myself, for street/strip, especially on the spray, I'd keep the compression down a bit (under 10:1) with the later ported heads. The late 71-up heads (58cc) have bigger exhaust valves (1.68 vs 1.62) The 291s (51cc) need more bowl porting and cumbustion chamber work to unshroud the valves.
My 69 390 is right at 10:1 (actually 10.1:1) , with ported/polished 291 heads (with 1.68 stainless exhaust valves) and a pretty agressive cam (282/292 duration, .512/.525 lift), and it pings when I'm on it hard with 93 octane. I'm also at 5000+ feet (Denver area). It's got a 2500 stall converter, R4B, and Carter comp series 750 carb.
