How many people have actually filled their new pumps with vaseline, primed the oil system with a drill to confirm oil flow at the rockers, run their engines and actually had a catastrophic failure?
Is this hype or reality?

In my experience its more hype...........but.....it hasnt given me catastrophic failure however it has caused oil filter bypasses to open allowing dirty oil into bearings and clogging oil filters and actually allowing dirt to recirculate on the top and bottom of the oil pump gears untill the engine was warm actually making the pump less effective by unusual scoring. We deal with these parts alot and also make them so for us it isnt catastrophic but for Joe in his garage it can add up very fast

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have just rebuilt my 304 and fell "victim" to the vaseline priming reccomendation. I manually pumped the oil system prior to cam run-in. I then changed the oil and filter. I suspect that I have done no real damage...I will be watching the pressures!
Can the pump end plate be lightly sanded to remove scoring and tighten tollerances? Do you sell just the thin gasket?

Greg we sell the midplate that sandwiches between the oil pump and filter adaptor as well as the gasket alone.
midplate with gaskets 33.00
gaskets 5 ea
You can sand it however it needs to retain flatness within .002"
