The two biggest thing's about sharping knife's is a good steel in the blade and the angle you sharpen at. Most knife's are ground at a 22 deg angle, so if you are using a wet stone you need to be careful. Don't use anything hot, like a grinder, that will retemper your blade. I use a wet stone and ceramic stick's for the finale edge.
In most state's a fixed blade's over 4 inch's is against the law, so check the law's. Smith & Wesson make some good one's and Cold steel is really good but not cheap.
