When we are talking about the differences in rings their are some but they are suttle compared to total seal rings. When you use a ring with a total seal or a power saver feature it is a must your pistons should either be hyperuetectic or forged. The ring landing on the top of the groove takes the hit when any mis-fires occur believe it or not. I have seen my fair share of cheap ring jobs on a cast piston and cracks on the piston ring landing and skirt. Quality pistons make a huge difference. Hastings are you std. mid quality replacement total seal are the holy grail of rings (opinion) Fed mogul or sealed power vary from nitrous-turbo-blower to std and drop in ring sets based on oil control, higher vaccum, greater tension retainment and the ability to take the heat If your on the fence on which ring to buy the Federal mogul speed pro's are the way to go

Just a side note here "sealed power" is now made by Hastings.. I have a set in my 360 and they sealed ok and seem to be acceptable. But I wasn't happy when I saw the little motorman guy on the box..since way back hastings has always meant cheap to me.. But I would second MC's suggestion on the FM rings..

I've never gone wrong with Sealed power moly. THey've been in 2 of my 4.6 stroker Jeep motors with over 70K and a whole bunch of 1/4 passes and stock cast pistons. I've got them in my Ambassador which has just under 8K on the clock which is mostly 1/4 passes + the mileage too and from the track. This motor is using TRW forged. Both are still running and still fast.

In my last couple of projects I have used Speed Pro rings without issue. I am not a fan of the gapless rings. I have had problems with them in the past. Rob

I have had trouble getting them to seat properly. Issues with blowby and oil consumption. That is with a fresh straight cylinder and a good hone job not on an old tapered cylinder wall. I don't know if there is anything to it but what I have heard is that pressure builds up inbetween the rings and allows the rings to flutter at high speed. Basically the ring isn't making good contact with the cylinder wall. I have never had any issues whatsoever with a good old Speed Pro ring set. Take it easy Rob

I have seen heavy coking between rings and broken top rings with scores on cylinder walls from these rings. But I have had good luck with them on daily drivers using good oil and a decent octane

I knew if I searched long enough, I would find a thread on piston rings :? So, it seems many do not like Total Seal's gapless rings? Anymore info on the pro/con, good/bad of this? I'm looking for rings before I go for the pistons. .010 would be great, Childs&Albert can make me a set of pistons but size determines everything and they found .027 rings. Is there a listing of piston ring companies somewhere. I need to make a lot of phone calls. The reason I'm looking for .010 is for the sake of future rebuilds on the same block and still be able to run it cool on the street. Remember we just can't go out and buy a 401 block at walmart :(:

After further research, I have it narrowed down to Total Seal's gapless or Speed Pro's file fit. As we are talking of a daily driven tow rig in my case, I'm stuck with this choice. The gapless have a Moly top ring coating while the file fits have Plasma moly for their finish. I like the sound of no blow by for a way longer duration in miles driven over file fit, but the Plasma Moly finish has that less wear factor I like as well. If only I could get gapless with a plasma moly top ring, I think I would have my cake and be able to eat it too. Childs & Albert have Zero gap rings that are proclaimed the best ring out there. Considering those as well. Any thoughts or opinions?

The way I read and understood it, there is two rings. One larger than the other were the smaller ring fits in a groove of the larger ring.

Also on a side note, I just found some gapless with PLASMA Moly coated top rings :!: #S2760 from Total Seal should anyone care :t:

I'll have to search for those - never heard of them :-| But that's OK, I'm ignorant.
