jeepsr4ever We believe that using a planetary gear and a adaptor we can make a stock 304 put out 500ft lbs of torque. This setup would be a underdrive for the engine and would fit between the engine and tranny. Making a tranny to hold up, thats the tricky part
Elliott Here's your tranny and it's a 5speed to boot: http://mail.telebyte.com/allanw/binder/5speed/ Gonna need a bell housing adaptation as I haven't been able to document one was ever built for the '74 IHC (AMC) 401. :t:
Elliott That binder tranny is a 2wd type, was used for divorced cases in 4wd applications. I'm not aware of it's output dimensions or if it has ever been adapted to a T-case as a married unit. Whatch'a think? Check out those gear ratios!
Elliott The above tranny pics were of the T-34, the one below is of the back of the T-35: Hmmm, does that look like an NP bolt pattern? Wonder what the dimensions and spline count on the output shaft is?
Elliott If you are interested in this tranny... I searched a lil more and found someone had built an adaptor to marry a Ford NP205. I wrote to see if I can get a blue print for the plate. The front input is 1 1/4" x 10 spline, haven't figured out how the bellhousing could be adapted yet... but wrote a couple guys.
Elliott :t: Ok, AMC 258 & 401s were used in IH rigs, they obviously have the same bell bolt patterns at the engine, IH had a cast iron bell that fit the manual trannies (including the long shaft T18) to the 258... so that would be the bell housing to mate the T34/35/36 5 speed. I know of a place out in OR that rebuilds the trannies if anyone is interested. :sa:
W.T.Sumner This reminds me of a model T ford I once seen that had two transmisions ,one behind the other, to climb hills. If I ever get back to the guys house I will get a picture.
Elliott Briteblock wroteBig ol 5 speed. How common is this thing? Mid '60s Loadstars or school buses. Pick out a Loadstar and you may get a PTO in the deal (looks like a take off cover plate on the drivers side). Dug a lil deeper and I don't think the IH bell will work with this tranny to AMC combo. The input shaft pilot is huge and would need to be cut down and a Lakewood bell could probably be set up to adapt the tranny with a plate. These trannys go for $1,500 rebuilt, I'd spect they'd be cheap in a yard.
