Came across this on another board.

Has anyone ever seen one of these or know how well it really works? Maybe if they dont make one that bolts up to a amc motor ...some one could design and produce a custom bracket.

The liquid cooled alternators are a step in the direction of going to a 42 volt system. BMW has been putting them on it's 750IL since 1995, and on a few more models in recient years. As of yet they are still using a 12 volt system, but expect BMW, and every other auto manufactuer to move to 42 volts in the next couple of years. Bosch and Delphi's liquid cooled alternators were designed for this purpose. The only way that I could find to get a hold of one of these is to steal one off a BMW. Don't expect to be able to go down to the local parts store and pick one up any time soon.

OK, school me on this .... I've dealt with 'herringbone slotted' (reduces MSF and other interference) water cooled motor generators (in the 500,000-750,000 Watt range) and have even seen some cryogenic cooled systems, but what on a Jeep is a "42 volt consumer"?

I believe that in saying "consumer" they are refeering to electrical equipment. Something that would be more efficent running at 42 volts. Ex: Fuel pumps, electric water pumps, etc... Perhaps a new line of Warn winches coming out soon? hmmmmmmm :-|

42volts is probly used for electric controlled valves. I have heard of 24volt electric valves but not 42...hmmm but if its in a BMW its probly a butt warmer :mrgreen:

Well I can see a 42 volt butt warmer in a Beamer, Volvo, Mercedes, Ecalade (and other truely trail tested luxury cars) - just didn't know what other uses of it would be on a real truck or Jeep. But a 42 volt winch? :-| that would take a 4 battery pack to run .... Or one 8) MONGO battery :? Mudrat

Good info and I can see how 42V would be a bonus and a drawback. But I still like the concept of a water cooled, water tight ALT. Now if we could get some decent BRACKETS for the 4's and 6's ( I know I need 2 right now) it would be great!!! { uh ... MC ... that's a NOT SO 8) SUTTLE HINT} for ALT and P/S brackets :shock:

water colled altinater sounds interesting. i don't have problems with the eagles electricals when wet. been fording creeks few times and still no problems. a custom made bracket would do if you aquire one of them. later, rollen :lo1l:
