I am in the process of pitching the dana 70 and adding a shaved disk brake 14 bolt. I already have 3 of these axles and one set of thick 5.13 gears. I will be taking pics as I go and will be showing shaving-ring gear cutting-disk brakes and installation into a 77CJ-7.

So why the 14 bolt? I know you said you have three laying around, but doesn't the 70 have more ground clearance and weigh less? :-|

sure the 70 has a larger ring gear and bigger shafts but with a 14 bolt I get better clearance ( after shaving ) a pinion support and no cross pin to break and with disk brakes its not all that heavy. My 401 seems to eat rear ends alive :!:

Yeah, I hear ya about the weight savings with disc brakes. I picked up (what I thought was a 60, ended up being a 61 :(: ) dana rear end and it took three of us to get it into the back of my truck, and that was lifting just one side at a time! Oh, btw, anyone want a dana 61? So MC, you ever think about making disc brake brackets for different rear axles?
