Over $3 a gallon???
OWTCH!!!!!!!!!
(Wasn't whining, BTW. The $2 Mark just goosed the problem to my attentuion a bit more. As I said in my first post, Lots of places have it far worse than me.)
As for the Alternative fuels..
As I'm not looking to fuel any sort of Diesel, so Biodiesel isn't of much interest to me and I haven't looked into it at all..
Ethanol seems a good possibility. Particularly since it can be brewed in a home made Still in your backyard. (With the proper permits of course) Also, an Ethanol powered vehicle will produce much less pollutants.
Ethanol does have it's drawbacks.. It burns invisibly, it doesn't produce quite as much energy as Gas, so your milage and power will suffer slightly and Ideally you should have a much higher cylinder pressure than would normally be considered.
Hydrogen Gas, Or H2 (H.I.C.E. - Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine) has many advantages. It produces MORE energy than Gasoline and has virtually no pollutants.
However, it it expensive to produce (at the present time) and very hard to store safely in quantities that would be usefull in a motor vehicle.
As an example, a Major University has aexperimental vehicle (4.0 liter Ford Ranger) running on PURELY Hydrogen from Pressure tanks in the truck bed. The engine is all stock, save for a Throttled "Dry Carb" in place of the Gas throttlebody. The car can also still run gasoline.
A Dual-Fueler
There are also processes for Home produced H2, but I won't go into them because these end up being rather expensive and complicated.
