I recently cross sectioned a 78 head from a 401. I found a wire like substance inside the water jackets. Could this be the support for the cast? I cross sectioned the head to see where to best remove about 4 - 6 cc of material to make use of a Wisco custom piston. The wire surprised me. Any thoughts?

i'll let you know on monday. i'm goin to ask my dad. he used to build
race motors in the 60's and may have run across this before. but my guess is maybe not . i would think the casting supports would have been
removed at the factory prior to assembly.

Yup - it was part of the system that held the sand together when it was cast. I've puuls vrap like that outta both heads and MC made the comment in another thread about having "rocks in his block" come out after tumbling it.
Can't find the thread or the post though - we need to get a topic search engine installed here, 6200+ articles (39% from MC 8) ) so it's tough to find them

OK, for all the peeps that don;t understand how a block is cast, I saw a show on the History channel about some guys building a reproduction of the Wright Brothers Airplane Engine. It was pretty cool, you basically build a mold of the engine out of something, then press it in wet sand, then you freeze the wet sand with CO2 I think. Then pull the molds out and pour the molten metal in. Really cool stuff. Then just wash off the sand and be done with it! Clean it up, machine it and rock and roll. I am not sure if this is how mass production engines are done, but I am sure that it is similar. Anyone care to add in here?

talked to dad sunday and he has seen this before. he thinks it is from
the casting process and it might have been a quality escape.so this
might happen once in a while. hope this helps.
